Our Work in Connecticut

First Candle is a Connecticut-based national nonprofit that enjoys the support of families, individuals, businesses and organizations throughout The Nutmeg State, as we carry out our mission to raise awareness, train caregivers and educate families about reducing the risk of SIDS and accidental suffocation, as well as provide bereavement support to families who have experienced a loss.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics,* the rate (per 100,000 live births) of infant deaths in Connecticut due to SIDS was 39.7 in 2003 and 55.4 in 2013. Even though the 1994 launch of the Back to Sleep campaign has helped reduce SIDS rates by more than 50 percent, SIDS remains the leading cause of death for babies one month to one year of age – and we remain committed to helping Connecticut families and those nationwide through education, training, and grief support.

We’re the proud recipient of a 2018 grant from the American Legion-Connecticut Chapter, to help educate daycare providers.
SIDS families host walks and golf outing fundraisers, like this one in Goshen, Connecticut.
We have conducted a number of Straight Talk for Infant Safe Sleep trainings in Connecticut.
We honored bereaved moms on Mother’s Day by planting a garden at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk, Connecticut.
