How Our NICU Let’s Talk Program Improves Safe Sleep Practices: Now Published in Neonatology Today
Inside Our NICU Safe Sleep Program: Data, Outcomes, and Clinical Implications
Every once in a while, we reach a milestone that reminds us exactly why we do this work. Recently, a white paper on our NICU Let’s Talk Community Chats program, co-authored by our Program Director Destiny Stokes, was published in Neonatology Today, offering both national recognition and meaningful validation for this innovative, community-led approach to safe sleep education. The peer-reviewed article highlights the real, measurable impact of bringing culturally responsive guidance directly into the NICU—showing how this model significantly improves parent confidence and safe sleep practices at discharge.
Why This Publication Is So Significant
Preterm infants face dramatically higher risks of SUID, yet many families leave the hospital overwhelmed and unsure about safe sleep guidelines. Traditional education models—pamphlets, rushed discharge conversations, or hospital handouts—don’t always resonate.
The white paper, Reducing Risk Through Connection: Community-Led Safe Sleep Education in the NICU, highlights these challenges and shows how our model addresses them.
Our approach wasn’t just acknowledged—it was validated.
What Makes the NICU Let’s Talk Model Different
We’ve adapted the successful Let’s Talk Community Chats model to the NICU by focusing on what families truly need:
✔ On-site sessions inside the NICU
Parents gather in a family room or adjacent space for supportive, face-to-face conversations.
✔ Trusted facilitators
Each session includes a doula or lactation consultant, a grandparent, and a father—voices parents relate to and trust.
✔ Open, judgment-free conversation
Topics include:
- Safe sleep practices
- Breastfeeding
- Infant product safety
- Postpartum depression
- Housing, resources, and social services
✔ Practical support
Families receive diapers, wipes, swaddles, and a safe sleep space if needed.
It’s support. It’s reassurance. And it’s grounded in cultural respect.
The Data: What Neonatology Today Highlighted
From January–April 2025, families who attended our NICU Let’s Talk sessions reported powerful outcomes:
- 100% increased confidence in safe sleep practices
- 93% felt culturally respected
- 96% planned to place their baby on their back to sleep
- 83% said the session influenced their discharge sleep plan
- All participants planned to use a crib, bassinet, or pack ’n’ play free of hazards
This is what true impact looks like.
Why Community-Led NICU Education Works
The white paper underscores a key truth: education must meet families where they are—physically, culturally, and emotionally.
NICU parents are exhausted, scared, and overwhelmed. They learn best in warm, supportive environments where they feel safe asking questions and exploring concerns.
That’s exactly why Let’s Talk works.
What This Means for the Future
Being published in Neonatology Today amplifies our message:
Culturally responsive, community-embedded education saves lives.
It gives hospitals a proven model they can adopt.
It highlights our leadership in SUID prevention.
And it strengthens our case for scaling this work nationwide.
But continued growth depends on partnership and support.
