Over the course of the past four decades, First Candle has funded cutting-edge research projects at medical institutions throughout the United States. Under the auspices of our Medical and Scientific Advisory Council, an internationally-recognized body of senior-level pediatric scientists, we continue to provide a single, focused outlet for individuals and organizations interested in supporting research to further our understanding of stillbirth, SIDS and other causes of sudden, unexpected infant death (SUID). SIDS research has yielded significant breakthroughs over the years. But our work is not done . . . despite this success, SIDS remains the leading cause of death for babies one month to one year of age and as many as 2,000 other sudden, unexpected infant deaths occur each year. First Candle is committed to advocating for and soliciting much needed funding for SIDS/SUID research to further our understanding of the causes and develop further preventive strategies for the future.
